Maharishi Mahesh Yogi— The Founder of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) Technique
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was the world’s foremost teacher and scientist in the field of consciousness and it’s practical application for the full development of human potential. He was responsible for the revival and introduction of the Transcendental Meditation technique, a universal practice that people from all walks of life, regardless of race, religion or cultural values can enjoy and greatly benefit from.
Maharishi invalidated the myth that effective meditation must be arduous and require many years of practice to truly succeed—and that the full benefit of meditation is available only to recluses or monks, and of little value to the rest of humanity. Maharishi proved that development of consciousness and spiritual growth was not only compatible with the dynamic lives of active people in the world, but essential. In fact, he highlighted that the missing link in life was the availability of a systematic meditation practice capable of unlocking the full potential of the individual for maximizing happiness, health, success, and fulfillment in life in a regenerative and sustainable way.
He quickly demonstrated that the Transcendental Meditation technique could satisfy that need. TM is an effortless procedure which anyone can practice—young and old alike—and derive immediate, lasting benefits with ongoing results. Scientific validation of the TM technique underscored its effectiveness with over 350 research studies published in leading, peer-reviewed journals over the past 30 years.
Training teachers and creating TM centers worldwide
The TM technique for women and girls
Maharishi created a self-sustaining, non-profit, educational organization with global scope to provide widespread instruction in the Transcendental Meditation technique to the people of the world. There are thousands of certified TM teachers in over 80 countries. He systematized the teaching of the technique into a systematic course so that instruction would produce consistent positive results for people everywhere, and be preserved for generations to come. From the quiet beginnings of his activities in India in 1958 till now, over six million people around the world have learned the Transcendental Meditation technique. Programmes around the world continue to expand, transforming the lives of individuals, societies, and nations as a whole.
Always upholding the nourishing role of women in society, Maharishi said:
“The dignity of a woman’s life is infinite, her status immeasurable, her capacity unbounded, her role divine. She fulfills the role of sustainer, creator, and promoter of life. She is the focal point from which radiates serenity. In the fast changing world of today her vision penetrates into the reality of the far beyond, the reality which endures beyond change.”
In 2008 Maharishi responded to the need for a wing within his global organization to address the specific needs of women and girls. There are now over 50 women and girls organizations such as the African Women and Girls Organization for Total Knowledge-Uganda, teaching the TM technique in countries on every continent.
We are proud to contribute to the nourishing role that countless women’s organizations are playing in the actualization of better quality of life for the women and children of the world. By providing the mothers of the world with the practical technique and understanding of Transcendental Meditation, in one generation we can transform life in a widespread way. As mothers are the first educators, raising the quality of life for every mother will immediately produce a higher quality of life for the children and families of the world.
